An ergometer is a device used to measure work output during physical exercise. It is commonly designed to assess performance by quantifying energy expenditure, resistance, and workload under controlled conditions. Ergometers are widely used in clinical settings, sports science, and rehabilitation programs to evaluate cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance.
The primary function of an ergometer is to provide accurate measurement of physical effort. Unlike standard exercise equipment, it is calibrated to display data such as watts, distance, speed, and calories burned. This allows for consistent monitoring of exercise intensity over time. Because of its precision, it is frequently used in medical stress tests to assess heart and lung function.
There are several types of ergometers, each designed for specific forms of exercise. Cycle ergometers are the most common and resemble stationary bicycles, where resistance can be adjusted to control workload. Rowing ergometers simulate the motion of rowing and engage both upper and lower body muscles. Arm ergometers are used for individuals who may not be able to use their legs effectively, focusing exercise on the upper body. Treadmill ergometers, though less commonly labeled as such, can also be used in performance testing with controlled speed and incline settings.
